Building a Career in Broadcast Through Steadicam

I'm Alex Doherty — a Nottingham-based Steadicam owner-operator with 25 years in television, working across music, live entertainment, premieres, state occasions and factual for the BBC, ITV and broadcasters around the world.

Steadicam owner-operator with 25 years in television, working across music, live entertainment, premieres, state occasions and factual. Credits include Later... with Jools Holland, Big Brother, The 1975 with the BBC Philharmonic, Kasabian and Russell Peters at The O2, Tim Minchin at the Apollo, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the House of the Dragon premiere and the BBC's coverage of the late Queen's funeral and the King's Proclamation. Calm and quick on live shows, comfortable moving through talent and audiences, and used to working to a director's shot list as much as finding the moment myself. I bring my own Steadicam rig and, when needed, my own assistant. Also a producer: creator of The Short Film Show, and production manager on a feature.
Host broadcast on two Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024), the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Euro 2016 in France, Euro 2020 in Baku and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, and regular live Steadicam for Sky Sports, the BBC, ITV and DAZN.

25 years behind the lens
I've spent over two decades operating Steadicam and broadcast cameras for most of the UK's major broadcasters and on some of the biggest live events in the world — the Olympics, the World Cup, the UEFA Euros and countless title fights, finals and festivals. Based in Nottingham and freelance since 2012, I own my kit and travel wherever the shot is — across the Midlands, the UK and internationally.
