Where did you start working in television?
in 2001 I started my career at ITV Central in Birmingham. One of my first roles was working on CITV and Central news as a sound assistant.
I later moved into technical support learning the roles of the engineering department gaining a good overview of the workings of the station and undertaking basic maintenance of technical equipment.
I later moved into the media center as a Technical Operator tasked with ingesting material, playing material out, and managing media for upcoming news programs. This was a busy vibrant job that gave me a great understanding of the world of Television. I was made redundant in 2003.
how did you get into Camera work?
In 2004 Alex worked for a Birmingham-based facilities company called Clockwork Television. I worked as a camera trainee mainly covering Saturday afternoon football games for Arial camera systems and was a client of Clockwork Television. Here I learned the skill of operating “Hot Heads”. I also covered many corporate events for local businesses.
What happened for the next few years?
In 2006 I joined Arqiva outside broadcasts as a staff camera operator and guarantee. My role was to look after the camera facilities and operate cameras on a multitude of large contracts. I also learned the skill of becoming a Steadicam operator at BBC Wood Norton hoasted by Tiffen
Clients included all of the major broadcasters, Sky Sports, BBC, ITV & Channel 4, on contracts such as Question Time, One Man and His Dog, Sky Sports EFL Championship contract and Last Night of the Proms, and a multitude of smaller contracts. This is where I met most of my current clients. Sadly I was made redundant again in 2012 when the company was outbid on several contracts.
What type of freelance work are you doing now?
There is a really really long list of jobs that I have worked on over the years since being freelance. I’ve been absolutely privileged to have been invited to work around the world on some of the biggest broadcasts that the world has seen from the Olympics to the World Cup, The UEFA Euros, and ATP & WTA tennis tournaments.
I also work across ad-hock jobs including, Rugby, Basketball, Netball, Cricket, Boxing, Hockey, Strongman, Swimming, Live Music, News, and Current affairs.

In 2017 I created a series for SKY called The Short Film Show, actually two series. From idea to screen, it’s on Amazon Prime now if you fancy a binge.
Production Manager
Sometime during 2015, I’m not too sure, it’s still pretty much a blur. I was the Production Manager for a feature-length movie called Adrift in Soho. Managing a cast and crew of almost 500.
Drone Racing
In 2016 I produced a pilot drone racing TV series. Basically, we put together 4 teams, with their drones and raced them around an abandoned factory, and filmed the whole lot. It’s a long story, a good one though, a whole website to be precise.
