Freelance Camera Operator
I have over 19 years of experience as a Television Cameraman working for most of the major broadcasters in the UK and around the World. I am an experienced Steadicam Operator and Cameraman I have worked on films, documentaries, short films and much more. If you keep scrolling there’s a really long list below.
I can work on practically anything that needs filming, anything from outside broadcasts, music, sports or news to operating a studio camera on live or pre-recorded productions.
This website is basic “no-frills” modern version of a live CV for promotional purposes, I will continue to update it periodically.
I work across a variety of outside broadcasting and single-camera productions.
Since 2012 I have been freelance primarily as a cameraman and have built up a range of corporate and broadcast clients. I have regular jobs that come back year after year, like the Touring Cars on ITV and other jobs that pop up every 4 years like the World Cup or the Olympics.
Where did you start working in television?
in 2001 I started my career at ITV Central in Birmingham. One of my first roles was working on CITV and Central news as a sound assistant.
I later moved into technical support learning the roles of the engineering department gaining a good overview of the workings of the station and undertaking basic maintenance of technical equipment.
I later moved into the media centre as a Technical Operator tasked with ingesting material, playing material out and managing media for the upcoming news programmes. This was a busy vibrant job that gave me a great understanding of the world of Television. I was made redundant in 2003.
how did you get into Camera work?
In 2004 Alex worked for a Birmingham-based facilities company called Clockwork Television. I worked as a camera trainee mainly covering Saturday afternoon football games for Arial camera systems and was a client of Clockwork Television. Here I learned the skill of operating “Hot Heads”. I also covered many corporate events for local businesses.
What happened for the next few years?
In 2006 I joined Arqiva outside broadcasts as a staff camera operator and guarantee. My role was to look after the camera facilities and operate cameras on a multitude of large contracts.
Clients included all of the major broadcasters, Sky Sports, BBC, ITV & Channel 4, on contracts such as Question Time, One Man and His Dog, Sky Sports EFL Championship contract and Last Night of the Proms and a multitude of smaller contracts. This is where I met most of my current clients. Sadly I was made redundant again in 2012 when the company was outbid on several contracts.
What type of freelance work are you doing now?
There is a really really long list of jobs that I have worked on over the years since being freelance. I’ve been absolutely privileged to have been invited to work around the world on some of the biggest broadcasts that the world has seen from the Olympics to the World Cup, The UEFA Euros and ATP & WTA tennis tournaments.
I also work across ad-hock jobs including, Rugby, Basketball, Netball, Cricket, Boxing, Hockey, Strongman, Swimming, Live Music, News and Current affairs.
The Short Film Show
In 2017 I created a series for SKY called The Short Film Show, actually two series. From idea to screen, it’s on Amazon prime now if you fancy a binge.
Sometime during 2015, I’m not too sure, it’s still pretty much a blur. I was the Production Manager for a feature-length movie called adrift in Soho. Managing a cast and crew of almost 500.
In 2016 I produced a pilot drone racing TV series. Basically, we put together 4 teams, with their drones and raced them around an abandoned factory and filmed the whole lot. It’s a long story, a good one though, a whole website to be precise.
Do you have your own gear?
Yes, I have my own gear a Black Magic URSA 4.6K Camera, I’m not going to go into the nitty-gritty of all the bits I have but send me a message and let’s talk nerd 🤓
But if I don’t have it I can get it I have a great relationship with Media Dog hire.
